WELCOME FROM THE HOSTS

Dear SMART Airports and Regions Conference Guest,

On behalf of El Paso International Airport (EPIA), it is with great pleasure that I invite you to attend the 2019 SMART Airports and Regions Conference and Exhibition in El Paso, Texas, July 22 – 24. Every year, aviation professionals from around the world gather to network and share the latest and emerging trends and then return to their regions inspired to raise the bar for innovation, improvement and economic development within their respective communities. We are humbled and proud to partner with Visit El Paso to be your host and we have so much to share with you!

EPIA has invested over $210 million in improvements over the past five years. A partnership with the Transportation and Security Agency (TSA) has made possible a new, efficient checked baggage inspection system, which increases throughput and processing time for checked baggage – a benefit for our airline partners and passengers. With a focus on customer service, we’ve made improvements to our terminal, to include updated furnishings and passenger-friendly amenities such as nursing rooms and a children’s playground. We are privileged to have been awarded Best Overall Customer Satisfaction, 2nd place in North America by passengers in 2016 and 2017 through the Airports Council International (ACI) Air Service Quality (ASQ).

Located on the U.S./Mexico border, we have unique opportunities that are central and vital to both El Paso and Ciudad Juarez economies. EPIA pioneered the use of land for non-aviation development, with two industrial parks, including Butterfield Trail Industrial Park (BTIP), home to multiple companies that have partner or “twin” plants on the other side of the border. Companies within BTIP are tied to industries such as boot manufacturing, electronics, and medical supplies. The parks are located in the Airport’s Foreign Trade Zone No.68, which ranked in the Top 10 FTZs in the U.S. in 2017 and 6th in Exports in U.S. General Purpose Zones in 2016.

Situated in the Chihuahuan Desert, our region has taken the lead in innovative municipal water solutions. El Paso is home to the largest inland water desalination plant in the world, processing up to 27.5 million gallons of brackish water to fresh water daily. Enviro Water Minerals Company (EWM), located on airport property, takes desalination a step further with cutting-edge technology by processing and merchandizing the mineral by-product of the desalination process while simultaneously adding 99% pure freshwater back to the region’s water supply. The symbiotic relationship between the public water utility and the private sector is an example of an innovative solution to the challenge many desert regions around the globe face today.

With an eye on the future and quality of life for the region, EPIA is also home to the world-renowned Tom Fazio designed, Butterfield Trail Golf Club. The course has provided an award-winning experience for golfers from all parts of globe. The course has been awarded “Best Courses You Can Play in Texas” each year since 2009 and “Best Municipal Courses in America” Since 2011 by Golfweek Magazine. I certainly hope you have a chance to enjoy the greens while you are here!

Our airport is easily accessible with 13 non-stops to all major U.S. hubs, provided by six airlines. We have so much for you to experience, learn, see, and do – I hope to see you this July in El Paso.
